Updates to Household Hazardous Waste, Trash, and Recycling Fees

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

The HHW fee helps support the Monday residential HHW mobile collection program. This program allows residents to drop off unwanted materials that are poisonous, corrosive, flammable, and environmentally hazardous, such as paints, gasoline, cleaners, TVs, rechargeable batteries, vapes, and more, at no additional charge.

The monthly HHW fee has historically been included in your trash and recycling service fee. However, for additional transparency, this fee is now separated out on the monthly utility bill.

At the start of fiscal year 2026 (which begins October 1, 2025), the City will separate out the HHW fee. On your monthly utility bill, you will now see separate lines for fees associated with your trash and recycling collection services, disposal service, and the HHW collection fee

Household Hazardous Waste items grouped by kind: four types of aerosol cans; different e-cigarettes (vapes); lithium, rechargeable, and mercury batteries; a paint can, solvent container, and a cleaning product container; a broken laptop, monitor, and a keyboard and a computer mouse; and camping fuel and BBQ canister (propane)

Trash and Recycling Fees

You may also notice that your trash and recycling collection service fees have increased unrelated to the HHW fee separation. Under the City’s contract with Republic Services, trash and recycling fees are subject to annual increases based on the Consumer Price Index- Garbage and Trash Collection category. For fiscal year 2026, this amounts to a 5.46% increase in service collection fees. Additionally, the Ada County Landfill has increased its disposal rate by 3%. For most residential customers, this will translate into a $1.30 monthly increase.
